FANS PULLING
FOR RENNER AT MIZUNO OPEN
For Immediate Release
July 16, 2008 - Providence, RI The
crowd was pulling for local prodigy, Jim Renner, 23, to bring
home the Mizuno Open at Triggs. Renner, winner of three professional
events already this summer, was grouped with co-leaders Dustin
Cone (Bennington, VT) and James Gilleon (Singer, FL). Renner had
a small band of loyal fans traipsing around the well-groomed Triggs
track.
While Cone struck first with a birdie, Renner battled back with
a three on the par- 4 fifth and they matched birds on six. Game
on. But Renner stumbled with a 3- putt bogey on 7 while Cone birdied
by stuffing a 5-iron to 4’ on the 190-yard par- 3. The Green
Mountain Boy, 24, who is now resides in Florida, then took charge
of the Mizuno by drilling a driver on to 5’ on the 298-yard
8th where the tees had been moved up to tempt. Renner got his
bird but he went 3-down in two holes.
Renner fans, however, saw a chink in Cone’s armor, the only
one all day, when he fluffed a chip and missed the par putt. With
Renner two down the two matched cards through 14, including birds
at 11 and 13. Gilleon was also hanging tough, only three back,
while Steve Sokol and Michael Carbone were within striking distance
in the second-to-last grouping.
On the 15th, a 496-yard par-5 that tempts players to cut the corner
around imposing trees, that could use trimming, with a slice drive.
In round one Renner’s drive on 15 barley stayed in play
but he managed to birdie. In the final round, however, the stocky
right-hander hit a harder slice that was batted back into play
by leaves and branches but came to rest on rock near a fence.
Renner took a swing anyway and the ball went backwards. He then
took an unplayable, hit to the fairway, flew the green, chipped
into a bunker, and ended up with nine.
Cone found trouble of his own on 15 when his drive came to rest
on a root and he blasted his second shot over the green. The Vermonter,
however, ended up making an 8 foot putt to save part and went
on to birdie 16 and 18 to finish in grand style and capture the
winner’s check of $5,100.

CONE
CAPTURES MIZUNO OPEN
For Immediate Release
July 16, 2008 - Providence, RI
- Dustin Cone, 24, shot a sparkling, final-round 64 to win the
Mizuno Open at Triggs Memorial Golf Course by three strokes over
Steve Sokol. Cone, a Purdue graduate from Bennington, Vermont,
birdied the first hole and never looked back, firing six more
birdies and eagle. The eagle came off a 300-yard drive to 4-feet
on the par-4 8th.
Jim Renner, of Plainville, Mass., and winner of three professional
events already this summer, stayed within two shots of Cone until
he pushed a drive into trouble right on the short par-5 15th,
and ended up taking a nine, and dropped out of contention. James
Gilleon of Middleboro, Mass, finished third, with a two-day, 7-under
total of 137.
Cone earned $5,100 by capturing the Mizuno Open, the third stop
on the inaugural 5-stop Golfer's Warehouse Tour. Cone, who's played
golf since he was four, also played varsity basketball in high
school. He majored in finance at Purdue and said he was happy
taking a couple of months off from golf in the winter to recharge
his batteries. "I wouldn't have been able to handle playing
golf 12-months of the year."
Cone made one bogey on the final round and managed, through deft
pitching and confident putting, to escape trouble on 3, 5 and
15, when he encountered trouble with wayward drives that forced
him to negotiate rocks, roots and hardpan.
The next stop on the Golfer's Warehouse Tour is at Crestwood
Country Club on August 6th and 7th. |

Alminas Gets First
Professional Win at Callaway Pro Classic
Golfers’ Warehouse Tour 2008 Awards
its First Winner July
2, 2008 Bellingham, Mass.--Steve Alminas (left),
a soft-spoken 23-year-old from East Longmeadow, Mass., came from
four shots back to win the Callaway Golf Pro Classic with a 6-under
total at the 6,428-yard, par-71, New England Country Club. Alminas
cashed his first professional winner’s check, $5,700, by
closing out the first of five stops on the Golfers’ Warehouse
Tour with a 67. “I was a little nervous,” said Alminas,
“but I handled it pretty well.”
First-round leader Mike Carbone, of Brewster, Mass., had the
lead most of the afternoon, but stumbled home with a 40 on his
final nine of this 36-hole event, finishing in a tie for 7th with
a 141 total.
Mike Welch of Quincy, Mass, finished in a tie for second with
Jim Renner of Brewster, Mass, with 138 totals. Welch got it to
6-under and took a share of the lead but coughed it up with a
double bogey on 14 and bogey on 18.
Alminas, who won the Amateur Invitation at New England CC three
years ago, hit only three drivers all day on the short, windy
course. “I tried to start the ball at the middle of the
greens and work the ball towards the hole,” said the Winthrop
College graduate, “I tried to play the easy shots.”
Alminas’ only hiccup of the day came on 18, where, feeling
the pressure, he missed a two-footer for par. But it didn’t
cost him because Carbone, in the final group, double-bogeyed the
last two holes.
The Golfer’s Warehouse Tour makes its second stop at Newport
National Golf club Tuesday and Wednesday, July 8 and 9.

Carbone Leads
2008 Callaway Golf Pro Classic on Golfers’ Warehouse Tour
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
July 1, 2008, Bellingham, MA Michael
Carbone, of Brewster, Mass., fired a bogey-free, 6-under, 65 at
tree-lined New England Country Club to take the first round lead
in the Callaway Golf Pro Classic. Seven other players were under
par on the 6,483-yard course that seemed ripe for the taking under
ideal conditions.
Keegan Bradley, 22, playing in only his third professional event,
shot a 67 and is second place. Bradley, a former Hopkinton High
School star, 3-putted 8, 9 and 10 but righted the round with a
230-yard 4-iron to set up an eagle on 11.
Jeff Curl, winner of last week's Portland Open and son of former
PGA touring professional Rod Curl, is in solo third with a 68.
Kyle Gallo, 69, overcame a double bogey on the par-5 11th, with
birdies on 12, 13 and 14. Jim Renner, of Plainville, Mass. and
winner of this year's, Cape Cod, Vermont and Massachusetts opens
and 69, is in a tie for sixth with Donnie Troy and David Schuster.
Carbone, 27, who caddies at Seminole in the winter, said he played
well but knows today's round doesn't mean much without backing
it up tomorrow. Bradley, however, is excited. "It's a lot
more fun playing as a professional," said the tall, lean
St. John's University graduate. "It's more enjoyable having
an opportunity to cash a check.
Bradley plays quickly, taking few practice strokes. "They
clutter your brain," said Bradley, who for the last four
years has been working with sports hypnotist, Pete Solona. "A
lot of guys on tour use hypnotists that people don't know about.
Tiger's caddie in his junior amateur wins was a sports hypnotist."
Play resumes at 7:30 a.m. tomorrow at New England Country Club
in the final round of the 36 hole tournament. Leaders go off at
9:40 a.m.
